Completion of Lipan ISD's Gym approved by voters May 14th.

The $2,500,000 bond will finally complete the gym begun 10 years ago. It's completion offers many possibilites to the community of Lipan. Also agriculture instruction facilities will be expanded with the bond proceeds.

Lipan Basketball Varsity Teams Wrap Up Outstanding Season

The Lady Indians (27-10) accomplished the dream of every team by advancing to the State Tournament! Making it to the BIG DANCE in Austin, the team and Coach Branson were showered with media attention rising all the way up to ESPN et al.

Even though the team was no match for the returning champions Neches, the birth of Les and Amber's baby girl, Leslie, at the Abilene regionals put a tiara crown on a fabulous winning season. And, WOW, with so much talent returning for the girls' next season, Coaches Branson and Michou have more than enough to continue the Lady Indian winning ways!

And the Lipan Indian boys (24-13) continued building their school's remarkable winning traditions going to a 10th straight Regional Tournament - 13th in 14 years! The season ended with the Ira Bulldogs who are building their own traditions with their 4th straight year at Regionals. Congratualtion to those Bulldogs. They were stopped by Bronte who was from the season's beginning expected to become the state champion.

And, Coach Cody Chandler, last year's TABC Class A-DII Coach of the Year, returns ample talent and spirit to advance deep into the playoffs.

Although this blog has not been able to chronicle the Indians as closely as recent year, my friends' texts and facebook posts have kept this fan "in the game." Once again, coaches and kids, thanks for the memories!!

Lipan Teams - Climbing the bracket ladder "higher, higher"

Lady Indians (No.18) (27-9) play Neches (No.2) (35-4) Thursday at 2:00 in Austin. This is the Ladies 5th trip to the State Tournament in Austin.

Indians (No.18) (24-12) play Ira (No.10) (26-4) Friday at 7:00 in Abilene. On Wednesday the boys beat Baird 51-42 in the Region II quarterfinals. This is the 13th of 14 recent years (10th straight) for Lipan to advance to the Regional Tournament.

HOLY SMOKE - ING LIPAN INDIANS!!!!

The Lady Indians had a HUGE win in Abilene Friday afternoon defeating the highly touted No. 8 Roby Girls coached by Amy Huseman from Nazareth with 3 recent state championships in her trophy case! The blowout score of 57-30 took everyone by surprise. I was there for that big win - the girls played awesome! And I must mention that coach Amber Branson was 9 months expectant! But, Believe-It-Or-Not, that is not the big story here . . . . .

THEN, LATER Friday evening, the Lipan Indians (boys) defeated Crowell at Jim Ned's gym just down the road from Abilene. Two very athletic teams hustling their hearts out, but Coach Chandler's boys' basketball skills commanded the court winning 64-31 advancing to the regional quarterfinals. STILL, this is not the big story . . . .

OK, 16 hours later on Saturday Coach Branson led the Lady Indians defeating No. 7 Newcastle who had given the girls their only district defeat. Winning 45-41. Granted there was some straining and pushing necessary to make this happen! Lipan does have an awesome coach in Amber.

Zully Martinez carried the team on a 21-2 fourth quarter run reversing a 15 point deficit with only 6 minutes to go! UNHEARD OF!

The Ladies now play in Austin in the state semifinals game on Friday - in the DRUM, the Meca of Texas UIL basketball.

I have never ever seen such excitement in my days of following Lipan basketball. Oh, I failed to mention something. Follow this link from LISD's website and you will see amazing media coverage . . . . click on the picture of the DRUM.

UIL Boys State Basketball Tournament Results - Championships. UIL celebrates 100th anniversary of service to Texas high schools.

Class 5A - Fort Bend Bush won over Garland Lakeview Centennial. (Both teams first appearance at the state tournament.)

Class 4A - Houston Yates over Dallas Lancaster. (Yates #1 team in USA by some polls. Set record of 15 straight 100+ wins. Yates is undefeated in 58 games. Game generated the largest tournament crowd in UIL history of 16,755.)

Class 3A - Lubbock Estacado over Dallas Madison. (First championship for a Lubbock team since 1951. Reverses last year's Estacado loss to Madison in OT)

Class 2A - Ponder over Idalou (Ponder wins for 3rd year in a row. Idalou was the only unranked team to make "the big dance" defeating #1 New Waverly in semifinals.)

Class 1A Division I - Cayuga over Bronte (#1 Cayugo became first Class A team to be same year state champions in football and basketball. Non-starter freshman Preston Anderson was the game MVP making 5 of 12 3-pointers - 2 late game 3's to take the game into OT, a final 3 to take the OT lead.)

Special Note: Bronte moves into Lipan's Division II for next year in District 10 setting up a possible regional semifinal game with the talented Ira Bulldogs. Returning 3 starters with two leaders being junior guards and fraternal twins Dakota (6-4" guard) and Kerwin Rawls (6' guard). Their father Rocky Rawls will be in his 28th year coaching the Bronte Longhorns.

Class A Division II - Nazareth defeated Grady. (Grady defeated both Lipan and Ira in regionals. #2 Nazareth defeated #1 Slocum in the semifinals avenging their finals loss to Slocum last year. This was Nazareth's 14th appearance in Austin, the most by far of any other of the 24 tournament teams.)

Other tournament notes:

1. The Austin American Statesman is a must buy each day Wednesday thru Sunday. A favorite quote of Lenora's Shane Teague was published: The coolest thing about going to state besides the basketball. . . "the hotel. It's like we had early spring break. We get to come to Austin, and the school pays for the food!"

2. For teams to survive in Austin their point guards must be quick, strong and very tough. The full court pressure is constant, and the referees don't call slaps, holds, pushes and bangs. Also, most of the teams had great 3 point shooting - especially in the clutch. And, as is always the case, missing free throws loses lots of games!

3. Thanks to young Indians Williams and Nelson, it can now be testified that 4th row courtside seats are lots better than even center court arena level tickets! But . . . . how does a fellow land such "below the ropes" tickets for next year!!!!!!!!!

Below: Jerry Blogger Vestal (SHS '65 SMU '69), Bobby Wilson (LHS '54 TTU '58), Ned Underwood (Wild Jam's coach)(SHS '53 TTU '57). Maxine Dunning Wilson and Polly Yandel Underwood were there too. These two couples lived together at Tech while Bobby and Ned starred for the Red Raiders. Small world! One of their best memories - losing by one point to nationally ranked #3 SMU up at Wichita, Kansas. They called themselves the Firehouse Five! They were shorthanded that game and suited up their manager!

Speaking of TRADITION - James Addison (LHS '50, TAM '54) star on one of P.T. Dunning's teams, he took these pictures in Abilene. In between he flew USAF jets and raised cattle. Thanks again, James!

More TRADITION to reflect on, Maxine Dunning (Wilson) (LHS '54) is a Lady Indian considered one of Lipan's most outstanding. Eventhough she wasn't able to pursue college ball, she is placed in the same great player category as Debbie Lou Howard (Williams), Amber Tate (Branson), Amber Williams and (who else? or next!). Maxine and Debbie Lou played in the era of 6 on 6 with 3 girls on each end of the court. (Beginning in 1958 the Office of Civil Rights started looking at banning six-on-six high school girls basketball. The "modern era" in Texas playing full court began in 1979. (Wikipedia and other)(Not-so-trivia stumbled on: in 1976 Debbie Lou Howard scored 65 points in a game & that was before the 3-point shot! She is 20th in the Texas record books.)

Then there is P.T. Dunning (Maxine's father) Lipan coach, bus driver and superintendent! He first coached in the 1920's and continued at various schools returning to lead again in Lipan in the 1940's. The oldest LHS ball picture that the blog has is:

Ira's next opponent is Highland who finished 3rd in its district after Roby. Ira dispensed of Highland easily in both district games by 30.

If Ira's coach Bubba Edwards had the nerve, he would have coach Humphrey take over Monday in Colorado City as the Bulldogs chew up Highland again. Edwards should go scout the Bordon County - Paducah match-up at Idalou. His "assistant" coach Toby Goodwin (head football coach) should drive east to Eastland for another look at the Indians.

Anyone, Edwards included, who watched Lipan's come-from-behind composure in defeating #3 Bland (big class A) might wonder how to match up with the Indians should they continue playing like that! At Richland High west Texas scouts witnessed Pittman's 3's, Drake and Waldrup's post finesse, sophomore confidence and total pressure coming off the bench.

Let's suggest that the Abilene Regionals will be worth attending!

Pittman 25 and Drake scored 22 (for the umpteenth time). Together they made 13 of 16 freethrows. In the paint Drake and Roby's Carson Alldredge banged and battled for 32 straight minutes - fascinating to watch! Alldredge put in 19.

Roby's defense was ferocious - no quit in it. The Indians' defense was the exact same.

Next up - regional quarterfinals against Throckmorton. Game to be played in Eastland on Monday

Lipan's Athletic Director has confirmed that Cross Plains is the site. Choosing these neutral sites is involved. Certainly "equi-distance" is the first issue, then total cost vs. projected gate, then other issues. For Roby, their girls are playing in the Abilene Regional Tournament at 1:00 on Friday with the possibility of being in Finals the following day. (UIL correction: Roby did defeat Throckmorton 33-22) (FYI - Strawn girls are still in the playoff hunt.)

One year ago Lipan defeated Roby in this same Area game played in Clyde. The score was 76-53 with a monster Indian night shooting 58% and making 16 of 18 freethrows. Roby's Aldridge had 21 points, and he returns as the centerpiece of the Lions' team.

Cody Chandler's first head coaching job was at Cross Plains. Also Lipan principal and AD Mike Perminter used to coach there. It's relationships like these all over Texas that help make the playoff games happen!

Final Playoff "Tune-Up" game for Indians playing District 10 Champion Petrolia (23-8)(10-0) tonight at 6:00 in Perrin Whitt's gym.

Petrolia High School is located some 18 miles NE of Wichita Falls. They won their Class A-Division I district which includes: Archer City (2nd), Era, Lindsay, Muenster (3rd) and Winthorst.

In Petrolia's other Playoff Preview they took on ranked 2A Eastland losing 52-38. Except for Q2 when Eastland had an 19-2 run, Petrolia outscored this TABC #12 team in each of the other three quarters! Eastland has a 6'10" player who is headed to college D1 and "is able to score whenever they need him to."

Petrolia's Coach Williams is experienced. His dad was a coach, and with 20 years experience, he has been coaching for Petrolia seven years. His team returns lots of players from last season including 2 starters when they went 2 deep in the playoffs. Due to the success of their football team, basketball's start was delayed for two weeks.

Once again Lipan has smartly chosen an outstanding playoff "tune-up" opponent. Some might say, "What was Coach Chandler thinking?" But others knowing the Bleeker tradition are thinking "crazy like a fox!"

I well remember when I first met James Collins. Maybe 4 years ago, in the Indian gym, I discovered I was sitting by a keen observer of Lipan basketball. The fellow had brought his mother up to a game. How unusual, he was in from Bedford and I from Grapevine visiting my mother-in-law. What a nice fortune to have begun a friendship with this 1961 LHS graduate, James Collins. He was a star on one of young coach Bob Maroney's many boys and girls successful 1957-61 teams. James went on to play 2 years of JUCO ball at South Plains College, Levelland, then graduated from Texas Tech. He married Cheryl from Rotan. He made a successful long career with Kodak. Their son Chad played for Texas Tech, later coached at Desoto and Coppell, and now has a real estate firm in the metroplex mid-cities.

James and I arranged to meet at Lipan's "Playoff Preview" game yesterday, and what follows is an email note that gives a peek into how, with careful nurturing, Lipan maintains "The Tradition" of excellence:

I enjoyed getting to visit with you yesterday. Quite an exciting game, and a very nice win for Lipan. Winning a close game against a quality team like Merit Bland can be a positive experience if faced with a similar situation in the playoffs. (After the seniors Drake, Pittman and Waldrup) the key to how this team does during the playoffs may hinge on how well the two sophomore guards hold up to the pressure they will face. Both were a bit shakey with turnovers yesterday, but they also made some key, positive plays down the stretch showing great confidence. Amazing how the team pulled the game out - going as long as they did without Drake!

Sorry to rush out following the game, but I had told my sister (84) I would pick her up to go to Santo to see her great grandsons' team play (1st and 2nd graders). I enjoyed watching the games. Also, I got to see Cody Chandler's son play (he's a first grader) and Amber and Les Branson's son. He is just a kindergardener but was very impressive. I can tell already he's going to be a good one. He already has excellent instincts for the game. It does look as though Lipan has a good group of young ones coming up in the system. Cody made it to Santo in time for his son's game.

The games were held in the old Santo gym. I had not been in the place since the 1960 season. We had a great rivalry with Santo as their point guard was terrific. His name was Jimmy Puryear (his dad was superintendent at the time), and he made all-state and had a very good career at UT Austin. My junior year we eliminated them on our way to the state tourney. When I was a senior we split games during the season - each team winning by one point on the other's home floor.

We met them in the state playoffs. Our season ended as we had a couple of key players foul out trying to guard Puryear. The game was played at Tarleton College in Stephenville.

So being back in Santo gym brought back some memories.

Seriously, thanks for what you do with the blog. It is a great source of information.

Let's make the following assumptions:

Winning the Area Round will be Paducah, Borden County, Lipan and Throckmorton. Lipan would play Throckmorton. Borden County, one of Texas least populated counties and on the northern edge of Snyder and Ira, is the repeating 6-Man football champion playing with 2 Ira basketball transfers. Paducah and Lipan are long time playoff & state tournament rivals, but Paducah, "under new management", may be under some strain. Throckmorton is always an athletic contender in both 6-Man and basketball, but has little media coverage. Just like with Strawn, Lipan should be very wary of these Greyhounds.

So . . . . In terms of pure entertainment value, the Paducah-Borden County game may be one of the best around! Then, the Regionals at Abilene Christian University will be nothing but maximum (heart-stopping) fun! The UIL better make sure Moody Coliseum has at a supply of defibrillators!

This expression about work and success causes the blog to think with great appreciation for Ryan Drake, Chris Pittman and Bradley Waldrup. These guys have been dedicated to the work necessary for Indian success. The team's fans have enjoyed watching these guys during their varsity careers. It is these guys that will be looked at to carry the Indians as deep into the playoffs as possible.

It was with good reason that Bob Springer's Texas Basketball Magazine placed them on his 2009-10 Boys All-State teams. Ryan was on the First Team list of only 33 players from all school classifications, all positions! Chris and Bradley were on the Honorable Mention lists. Great work guys and best of luck!

To apply the words of the hardworking successful Paul McCartney, these guys "don't work at being ordinary!" They have set an example to those who thrive as followers of the Lipan Indian Tradition. Your inspiration is noted! Thank you!

Speaking of hard work, Lipan's Riddle brothers playing at Hardin Simmons University this year, have worked hard, expected success, but team-wise it has not been the year for the HSU Cowboys. However, it is fun to pluck the following information from recaps of 2 recent games:

Cowboys win over Schreiner 88-82 in American Southwest Conference - "Casey Riddle filled the stat sheets with 16 points, 10 assists, seven steals, four rebounds and two blocks." In the Hardin-Simmons loss to Sul Ross University 78-81 a recap of the game stated at one point that "HSU made a strong push as the Riddle brothers – Casey and Seth -- scored 10 straight points for the Cowboys. Casey Riddle had a career-best 21 points and seven assists."

If the Indians are so fortunate to make the Abilene Regional Tournament, one highlight will be seeing these two guys! Of course, the Indians are "Austin-minded."

Regarding the Nazareth Tournament - Should be fun and fabulous competition for both the Lipan girls and boys to make the trek up to Swift-land. Understand they used to do this, but it's been a few years..

Class A Division II Lipan ends the regular season 23-7 going undefeated in district. In the last 20 years, the Indians have won 18 district championships and 2 as district runner-up. Since January 2003 the Indians have won 82 straight district games.

In the playoffs, district winners are given a bye and begin play at the "Area Round." On about Feb. 26th/TBA, Lipan plays the winner of the bidistrict contest between district 13 third place and district 14 runner-up.

In the meantime of great interest are Lipan's "playoff preview" or "playoff practice" games. The current games coach Chandler has scheduled are both with Class A Division I schools: (1) TABC #3 Bland (aka Merit Bland) this Saturday; and (2) on Monday Petrolia which won district 10 .

Some of those casting votes may have known that Paducah made a poor showing in Snyder on Fri. They lost to class A Stanton 45-35. The Dragons, in a weak district, have scored over 111 three times. Stanton, now TABC #24, played great defense, rebounded well against the taller Paducah, had little problem breaking the press and on offense their point guard kept finding open players.

Also heard #3 Ira (scoring over 90 six times) cancelled a practice game this week due to injuries. The Bulldogs play Class A #19 Seagraves in Post on Friday. Word from the Snyder Farmers Cotton Gin and the John Deere house is that all-state Kylor Fine's ankle will be ready for the playoffs!

Indians' first "Playoff Practice" game 10:30 this Saturday against Class A #3 Merit Bland.

Moran Bulldogs visit for Senior Night. The Lady Indians wrap-up their season. The Indians, their 1st of 3 final district 15 games.

Moran Results:
Lady Indians defeat Moran 78-32. Season (17-14) draws to a close finishing 4th (8-6) in district. On this Seniors' Night, Shayla Wright had 23, Zully Martinez had 24 and Rhiana Michou had 21. Also reported was Kaitlan Scott with 2-3's.

The Lipan Indian boys defeated Moran by some 50 points. Reported so far is senior Chris Pittman scoring 27 and Ryan Drake with 22. This puts the Indians at 21-7 for the season and 12-0 in district
which has two more games.

Having won district, the boys are given a bye in the playoffs at the initial bidistrict round. The area round begins about February 26th. Preparing for that, the Indians will be eligible to play 2 "warm-up" or "playoff preview" games after district wraps up.

Lipan JHS Lady Indians go 18-0 on the season. The ONE LOSS last season is finally behind them! What might the future hold?

This post needs some background. Six seasons ago, just for the heck of it, to keep tabs on Lipan's boys varsity and coach Bleeker, this blog from Grapevine, Texas, started as an experiment just between me and the two Coppell grandsons. I'm thinking Larry Williams was the only familiar person in the gym to us. Oh, also, Wesley Jackson who mowed our back patch. And we were told Clay Cook was a "cousin." The rumor from the beauty shop was that Shirley's grandson was small, but a really good ball player. But more to the point today, "they said" Casey Riddle's junior high brother was probably going to be even better. I wondered who these guys were. I had my doubts. Only grandmothers would talk with such vision about their JUNIOR HIGH youngster.

So that's some background. And, now, thanks to "cousin" Richard Ator, the blog has another varsity vision into the future . . . .

Going out on a limb with predictions: Expect Lenora Grady and Turkey Valley to meet in their regional quarterfinal to determine whose honor it is to play No. 1 seed Ira in the regional semis. Also, expect Gail Borden County to play No. 2 seed Paducah in the quarterfinals to determine Lipan's semifinal opponent.

But, to be sure, Ira and Lipan don't have "free passes" to the Abilene Regionals.

Lipan Indians, 20-7, 11-0 in District 15, coast to a 52-31 win with Strawn. Lipan finds itself in an awkward, somewhat risky, situation.

Big numbers from the game:

Drake with 22, Pittman 11, Waldrup 10, Chandler 100 and Howard with 75 - if you're following along! And numbers 20 and 79 are good too!

But speaking of big numbers, including 14-0 & 82-0, Lipan and Coaches Chandler and Howard are gentlemen with the challenge of preparing their young men for the playoffs. All the while, the district competition this year is probably an inadequate spring-board for the Indian Austin mindset. This is why Lipan sought out December tournaments that stretched the team's reach. This is why the "playoff preview games" will be even more important than usual.

Certainly no offense is intended to their 3 remaining opponents, but Lipan averaged defeating them by 50+ points in the first go-round. There is an awkward tension now between the need to look ahead to the playoffs and the challenges of making the most of the season's last 2 weeks. In sports, this presents both physical and psychological risks.

What is needed now for the Indians? They/we need to be smart! They/we need to stay focused. The coaches, fans and graduates in the Indian Tradition have insights. But . . . Lipan's young gentlemen players, especially senior starters Ryan Drake, Chris Pittman and Bradley Waldrup and Ryan Michou, too, will be largely responsible for . . . . . making these games spring-boards!

The game got a rocky start with Coach Crabb's dog-ettes racing to a 17-zip lead. From that point Coach Branson's Ladies outscored Strawn 33-27 :) Scoring: Martinez 11, Wright 10, Michou 7, Baldree 3, Archer 2. (Corrected 2-8-10)

The Lady Indians, now 16-14, have one remaining game - Senior Night next Tuesday hosting Moran.

Strawn will be the District Champions for the 3rd year in a row. District 15 competition has been unusually fierce this season with Strawn, Newcastle, Gordon and Lipan never being pushovers. With this kind of preparation, hopefully the Region 2 tournament in Abilene will have at least one District 15 representative!

And if . . . . .the Indians defeat Strawn on Friday, Drew Howard, in his 3rd season as assistant coach, will have won his 75th game for this varsity tradition that means so much to him.

And if . . . . . the Lady Indians win at Strawn, Amber Tate Branson, in 3 seasons (1 as assistant) will have her sights on 50 victories . . . if the girls surely win their final game with Moran and we borrow their first win next season :). How Coach Amber loves the royal blue and gold!

Indians (19-7): 60-40 with Drake 22, Nelson 11, Pittman 11, Waldrup 10.

Lady Indians (16-13): 59-28. No details texted. The good news is, the Lady Indians will have the 1st season in 5 where they have more wins than losses. The bad news is, it's the 1st in 5 seasons not to make the playoffs!

Monday update: UIL Realignments and TABC Rankings

UIL Realignments: Lipan's region 2 district 15 becomes district 16 with Graford joining. Lingleville and Huckabay move to region 4 district 25, and Moran gets transplanted into district 15. Huckabay has been great competition with Lipan, but Graford brings good stuff too.

Going from an 8 team district to a 6 team district eliminates 4 district games that make room on the schedule for playoff toughening matchups.

TABC rankings: Little change seen. Lipan remains at #9. Paducah's narrow escape at Turkey Valley puts TV back in the rankings at 25. Turkey Valley, Grady and Borden County are being taken seriously!

Even avoiding any further loses, it's difficult to see a realistic path into the playoffs this year. This road victory at Huckabay, winning by scoring 61 points, says so many positive things about this team. With 3 remaining games, the contests with Lingleville and Moran should readily be won. However, a win over #1 Strawn would be a major upset and would mean so much to the Lipan Lady Indians. The possibility of an upset at the Greyhounds' gym makes the task daunting - but still possible. This writer says, "let's give it our best shot, there is nothing to lose!" Think how much fun it would be for the Ladies to pull this off! Update: Strawn was upset at Gordon last Tuesday 48-32. Eventhough this shuts the door on Lipan playoff hopes, still . . . this further shows that a Lipan upset at Strawn is possible next Friday!

Road trip notes from Snyder . . .

Ira ISD - their student body is composed of 58% transfer students from Snyder and Hermleigh, and Ira is making plans to build a new school plant just like Hermleigh. Nice to have windmills and oil wells peppering your tax base. Ira has 7+ months of expense in unrestricted general fund balance!

Wild Jam took his Snyder Tiger coach, Ned Underwood, out to the Ira-Roby game knowing he would be impressed with the Class A Division II quality ball that Bubba Edwards has coached into his talented kids. Coach Underwood is the winningest coach in Snyder history winning some 350 games, and certainly an early inductee of the Snyder Sports Hall of Fame. At Texas Tech, Ned and Polly were apartment mates with Lipan's Bobby and Maxine Wilson, and was captain of the Tech team his senior year.

OK, the Ira Bulldogs clearly deserve their TABC #3 ranking, but after witnessing blowouts with Roby and Hermleigh, its difficult to see how the Bulldogs would match up with the disciplined defenses of teams like Lipan, Slocum and Nazareth. Roby and Ira were tied 11-11, before Ryan Holmes' team got to witness a classic 38-2 run before half-time. Eventhough Roby had plenty of talent on the court, they became like deer-in-the-headlights as Bubba Edwards road-kill machine raced along. These fast muscular 6-man footballers can play the hardcourt too - unlike, say Strawn, near Lipan.

Edwards was teased later with the notion that Lipan hoped to see them again as the Bulldog train makes its way through Abilene to Austin. His request for prayers for just-that-passage were rejected out of fear Yoda Priest Tommy Bleeker might overhear and reek havok by telling "the Lipan mother-in-law!"

Other region 2 notes: #7 Paducah visited previously ranked Turkey Valley (15-4) and escaped with a one point win after being down 6 in Q1 and tied at Q2 & Q3. Talk about a home court advantage! This close game probably reveals that the Dragon has a soft underbelly!

Finally: Small victories are satisfying like Coach Humphrey's underclassman led Ladies taking a 13-11 Q1 advantage over Amy Huseman's #4 Roby girls. Huseman is fresh off a Roby state championship last year plus championships at Nazareth in '05 and '07. Of course, that Bulldogette lead was fleeting :)

PSS: Speaking of small and victories, LJHS girls (16-0) won Tuesday over Bluffdale.

#7 Paducah is blowing out their opponents. Just check out Maxpreps.com
Tonight they play Turkey Valley who is having a good year and is the Dragon's closet district competition. TV was ranked #23 last week, not now.

Lipan's JH girls great season is still undefeated at 15-0.

Wild Jam's work takes him to Snyder, Texas, today where he plans to watch the #3 Ira Bulldogs play Roby which offers good district competition. But also, the #4 Roby girls will run the floor against the Lady Bulldogs coached by Troy Humphrey and Jan Kruse. In his 2nd year at Ira, that girls program is being resurrected. Already this year they have won more games than the past 4 seasons! But also, ~~last I heard~~ their JH girls had only lost 1 game!

So, hopefully the Newcastle gym location will allow text messages to zing! Can't wait.

And, finally, yes, the Indians will extend their 7 year district winning streak to 76. (But they had only lost a handful of games in the 10 years before that!) HCNews sports writer Rick Mauch had a super interview with Cody Chandler about that this last weekend. The blog hardily agrees with Coach Chandler in down playing the importance of this. However, he makes a powerful motivating observation about the string of graduating classes, during their LHS career, who have made the state tournament since 1993!

Boy, it's fun being a Lipan fan - watching the LHS students who, as Paul McCartney said, "don't work at being ordinary!"

Monday means TABC ranks come out around noon. Also, this Monday practice for the Ladies means . . . . Newcastle.

A blog commenter rightly adds to last Thursday's post:

"those things are always front and center with our kids.....playoffs are still a mathematical possibility....lipan girls will play hard and are plenty capable of running the table."

The blog has been thinking about that all year long. And as for "possibilities" - that's why we play the game!

The TABC boys polls will show how #6 Laneville's ranking is affected by it's loss to #1 Slocum last Friday. It's of some curiosity to wish more information was known of #8 Dodd City that is ranked just ahead of Lipan. DC had a great season last year only to be knocked out by Slocum - just like Lipan. But really, that's a concern of region 3.

In region 2, wish more information was available on #7 Paducah, a team that had a coaching change over the break. Ira's coach has mentioned Padu is even stronger than last year but that may have been fear mongering for Indian consumption :) Granted Lipan clearly remembers the talented fast Dragons last year at regionals. Just wonder if anyone has actually seen Paducah play in the last two weeks.

Why this blog post? In all seriousness, President Obama knows that in his youth, and even now on the White House court, basketball teaches some of the attributes he needs daily in his intense job - possibly giving him a competitive stamina edge. We do pray our leaders can play a quick and nimble never ending transition game with the constant pressure of a full court press. Say what you will, but a point guard general who can see the whole court is the most valuable player eventhough a more flashy scorer usually gets the MVP votes.

This fan's Observation: Time to face it - With the Lady Indians' playoff chances a virtual impossibility, Characteristics like Fun, Pride & Class are now front and center!

Teams with the 3 best records advance into the playoffs. At this point Strawn is 8-0, Newcastle 7-1, Gordon 6-2, Lipan 4-4, Huckabay ?

If Gordon were to lose again to both Strawn and Newcastle (that's a BIG IF), their record would likely be 10-4. And, it seems unlikely, but if Lipan were to defeat as a visitor Newcastle, Huckabay and Strawn, their record might also be 10-4.

But, since Gordon beat Lipan twice, they advance into the playoffs. Life goes on :) :)

So, still, the Lady Indians must take care of business one game at a time! Take care of the things they can control. Wear big smiles and enjoy the DANCE part of the game!

All the while, Lipan fans will be expecting to see the Lady Indians and coaches setting a championship example by having Fun, playing with Pride, and showing Character. Go Indians!

Reportedly the Lady Indians were ahead much of game, and some missed free throws may have made the difference :-( District record now 4-4. Zully Martinez had around 25 points.

Boys scoring was something like Pittman 21 with 15 each for Nelson, Drake and Salazar. The layup was the shot of choice tonight.

Back on December 15th the Lady Indians began district play, and the visiting Lady Longhorns wrangled a narrow 4 point victory.

Playing now with more balance and intensity, the Lady Indians will be looking to even the score with Gordon. A victory tonight adds momentum to Lipan's goal of playoff eligibility.

The boys game follows at 8:00. The Indians are expecting to lasso the Longhorns and extend their unblemished district record.

Lipan vs. Strawn basketball results: Boys win big. Girls play M.A.D. for 4 quarters, but Lady Greyhounds shoot out the lights!

When you add it up, one conclusion is: Lipan 145 - Straun 89.

Lipan boys won 97 - 29. Ryan Drake's 26 led all players and scoring was spread all over the lineup.

The night's showcase event was the girl's game which started 50 minutes late due to a ref's car trouble which interupted each team's preparation. Summarizing the game, Strawn's Lady Greyhounds were simply amazing leading throughout winning 60-48. Lipan never seemed to be completely out of contention, and to their credit the Lady Indians played with M.A.D. intensity! However, Strawn's outside shooting was .... awesome ..... and unexpected. Just imagine 7 three's in the first half - and not from their "stars!"

If district 15 were to have held a player draft, likely post Jamie Heflin (12 RBs on D!) and point guard Zakie Winegeart (8 ASTs & 6 STLs) would have gone 1 & 2. But, while Lipan's game plan covered up these two girls, unexpectedly Diamond Berumen sunk 5 3's and Tiffany Lee had 3 while Chy Boston was 5 of 6 FG's in the paint.

Lipan's Shayla Wright had a good game with 18 and Rhiana Michou surely had one of her best games with 13 including a couple of late 3's. The Greyhounds kept Zully Martinez contained. When driving into the paint, Heflin and Boston's height denied Martinez room to manuever. The team played with 4-quarter intensity, but in this game could not match up with Coach Joe Crabb's team that likely will sweep district 15. The last 2 seasons Strawn played in the regional finals game, and, even with All-Stater Kirstin Crabb graduated, it's easy to imagine the same this year.

Lipan fans, this is one serious opportunity to prove a "home court advantage" and potentially reshape the Lady Indians's future.

The Strawn boys have one of the Lone Star state's most powerful six-man football programs. Playing in this year's state finals they lost to repeating champion Borden County 122 - 88! In the recent past, these gridiron specialist have not been able to transition their athletic prowess into hardcourt superiority like their sister Lady Greyhounds have.

For the record, Lipan's seniors, Nasty, Wallop and The Pit, will not be intimidated!

Today the Lipan Indian teams visit the Lingleville Cardinals. But, it is NOT too soon to be honest about the Lady Indians' playoff prospects.

District 15 assumes that the Lipan boys will once again go undefeated. With their Austin minded focus this group of guys should make good on this. The district's teams will have their focus on 2nd and 3rd for playoff births.

Last season, the Lady Indians earned a playoff spot with a 9-5 district 15 record. HOWEVER, a 10-4 record probably will be necessary this year. I know the coaches are thinking about this, but I don't imagine the girls are. Kids being kids they live one day at a time. This is why we have coaches, parents, teachers, and yes, fans!

The Ladies already stand 2-2 and honestly they have crummy alibis for at home losses to Gordon and Newcastle. (Sorry if this truth sounds harsh.) Fortunately, that is the past and no longer matters at all :)

Disecting the future, the assumption is that they must and will sweep Lingleville, Moran and Bryson. Tonight begins this 6-0 segment of the season.

But let's be honest about Strawn. Unless things change, it is reasonable that these Strawn Grayhounds will run away with victories in both encounters. With that assumption, the really difficult prospect is winning all three away games with Newcastle, Gordon and Huckabay. But in-all-reality, stealing 2 of 3 games as visitors should be a nice accomplishment. IF all this happens, it looks like the Ladies finish district 9-5 missing out on the satisfaction and fun of the playoffs.

So bloggers, why this daunting but reasonable analysis? It is because Wild Jam believes that by envisioning the future, the future can be changed!

With a convincing victory tonight down in Lingleville, next Tuesday a future-bending-opportunity comes along. That's when Coach Branson's Lady Indians get Strawn inside Lipan gymnasium. Then what?

The Lipan fans will be hyped for a victory. But will the team be able to do what is necessary?

The way this season started out so positively and then faultered, with the talent these girls have worked so hard to refine, Wild Jam agrees with those who say the girls must play Mean, Angry & Determined. Nothing less than M.A.D.

Lipan wins going away 74-44 over Huckabay. Ryan Drake was high-point with 29 plus he had at least 3 of his patented blind-nasty-dish-assists!

At half Lipan lead 37-26 but the game seemed both closer and wider than that at times. With an unusually high 26 total fouls at half, 3 of Lipan's key players were hobbled with 3 fouls plus 3 more players had two fouls apiece. Huckabay's full-court press was causing Lipan to speed up its game resulting in many turn overs and frantic careless fouls. Pittman would eventually foul out. Huckabay had 2 foul out.

Huckabay did not have the team height to match posts Drake and Waldrup. However, their tenacious defense was surprisingly disruptive of efforts to get the ball to the Lipan "big men." However, the Drake-Waldrup tandem is a powerful combination of muscle and skill that wore the visiting Indians down in the 2nd half.

Boy! It was good to see Zach Martinez back on the court from his arm injury. He showed no limitations as he contributed ball handling quickness. The front court crew of Pittman, Williams, Nelson, Salazar and Martinez continues to take shape. Youngsters Nelson and Williams show increased confidence. One observation is that Pittman's point guard activity has limited his valuable offensive threat as a true outside shooter - especially his THREES!

Lady Indians win a crucial key game over Huckabay 48-44!

Those who feared the sun had begun to set on the Lipan Lady Indians . . . . they are re-thinking that view after tonight's game.

Shayla Wright had a great night with 19 points. She was unusually effective in the key. But her freethrows in the last game minutes were absolutely essential in sealing this victory over the state ranked Huckabay Indians. Zully Martinez was next high with 15 points, but her rebounding, assists and press busting dribbles must be mentioned as critical to this win.

The poised yet aggressive play of Winegartner, Archer, Cooper, Scott and certainly Michou showed that this team can still contend for a playoff berth.

Huckabay will really be tough in the rematch back on their home turf. Their team is laden with talent. Fulfer was a complete package player with a game high of 26 points.

Senior Moments as Indians consider Indians.

I'm old enough to appreciate the occasional "senior moment." But here are just three moments that linger after seeing the Lipan Indians play Bonham at the Prosper holiday tournament.

Senior moment No. 1: Bradley Waldrup's absolutely perfect jump hook! Waldrup is a great rebounder, but wow, where has that jump hook been? I'll be looking for more of those!

Senior moment No. 2: Chris Pittman's deadly assist-scoring-passes in the first half. Was I seeing the Christmas ghost of a Brabson past!

Senior moment No. 3: Then there is Ryan Drake's 25 points against Bonham with his superior freethrow skills. He can be depended on to be the Indian opponents' stealth bombing bad dream. A year from now his moniker will have been filed away as a youthful nickname. But for now, even if antonyms like pleasant, easy, clean and unobjectionable all make more sense, his numbers this year are nothing but Big Nasty!

To these three seniors and these kinds of moments, please, keep 'em coming :) lol

But mainly, how about the Lipan Indians Beat the Huckabay Indians!

Teams were tied at 33 after Q3 with Lipan leading by 4 at half. Newcastle in the "bonus" for 4th quarter and made a good 80% of freethrows to pull ahead to win. Lady Indians find themselves unexpectedly down 1-2 in district play as they are fumbling to find the early season winning dynamics.

Prosper Tournament Update - Lipan wins 2 of 4 ending Pre-District preparation at 9 - 7. Team shaping up for a strong run in Region 2 again in 2010! Indians kick off district hosting Newcastle on Saturday.

Heading into the Lucas Lovejoy game, Coach Cody Chandler's Indians are 9-6. After the holiday tournaments the last three years his teams' records have been 9-8, 12-6 and 9-8. Like the previous 3 years, the fall's competition has pushed the TEAM to find its potential. During district play the team will continue refining their ball handling skills and increasing their "put-back" points made with already aggressive rebounding.

Game No. 3 - Lipan (9-6) defeats 2A Krum 61 - 53. Flash: Pittman makes 10 of 12 freethrows in 4th quarter! Scoring: Pittman 22, Waldrup 12, Drake 12, Salazar 10, Nelson 2, Martin 2, Williams 1.

Game No. 2 - 3A Bonham wins 62 - 56.

Drake with 25 points. Pittman was impressive with his assists enabling Lipan to lead at half 32-30. Bonham's steals and Lipan's FT misses were significant factors in the loss. Bonham's post, JT King, was a force.

Game No. 1 - Class A-D2 Lipan defeats 2A Nocona 51 to 25.
Record advances to 8-5. Drake with 28. Point position was shared between Anthony, Chris and Trevor. Zach Martinez out 4+ weeks with broken arm. Chris' turned ankle estimated recovered to 80%.

Eula Girls Tournament Update - Lady Indians were unable to find a holiday "V" going 0-3.

Tolar's record is 8-2 and they return all 5 starters from last season. Lipan's record is 6-5 and they are playing with 3 returning starters.

It appears that Lipan's schedule may have seen tougher teams. Also, for-what-it's-worth (meaning not much!) Tolar's win in 2006 was this neighbor's only win over Lipan in 18 years. That win was 53-52 on a freethrow made with only one second remaining.

Lipan has some advantage being the host to the wiggly Rattlers.

With Lipan playing all larger size schools in the upcoming Prosper holiday tournament, a win against Tolar tonight goes a long way helping the Indians complete the "pre-district season" with more wins than losses. Again, for-what-it's-worth.

The blog noted such a 50-50 start was likely when the 2009-10 schedule was examined in the fall.

Tough games, tough competition, tough opposing skilled players means one thing for the Lipan Indians . . . . . a deeper run in the playoffs. May that be so!
